Teen with Down Syndrome sets new world record

A 19-year-old teen with Down Syndrome has conquered the London Marathon and became a Guinness World Record after just five months of training.

Lloyd Martin from Cardiff completed the 42.1 km course across the capital with his mother cheering him on.

Guinness World Record has awarded him the certificate for becoming the youngest person in his learning disability category to finish a marathon.

"I'm so excited to run London. I love being fit and healthy and I want to make my family and friends proud," the teenager said.

Mum Ceri Hooper also told the BBC how proud she was of her son's accomplishment.

"In Lloyd's words, it's achieving his dream," she said.

"Really anything is possible if you put your mind to it. With a bit of work, you can achieve it."

Recalling the experience, the proud mum said: "He ran continuously for 14 miles which is the longest he's ever run before."

Although Lloyd walked for a bit after his 14-mile-long streak, the crowd cheered him on every step of the way, and despite the challenge the mother-and-son duo had "a ball".

The pair were at a loss for words when he finally crossed the finish line and they both "burst into tears."

Lloyd is also now the third Welsh Special Olympics athlete to compete in the London Marathon.

Prior to completing the world-famous marathon, Lloyed had completed an astonishing 30 Parkruns.

Until last Christmas the teenager had never run further than three miles, but his mother was determined to get him marathon-ready.

Ceri, who has taken on the London Marathon four times, created a specialised training regime for her son which included weekly runs.

Lloyd managed to secure a spot in the marathon thanks to the help of the Special Olympics GB, where he is also a footballer and a gymnast.

Images: Facebook/ Twitter

"Big one for shenanigans": Aussie larrikin paddles a giant pumpkin down a river

In potentially the most Aussie story ever and a suspected world first, one bloke has pinched his mate's award-winning pumpkin to turn into a paddle boat and sail down the Tumut River.

The enormous pumpkin was grown by farmer Mark Peacock, who grew the vegetable to a whopping 407kg and would regularly post updates on the gourd's growing progress on Facebook.

The pumpkin even earned a fitting name, Tormund after a character in Game of Thrones, and was used to feed his livestock.

After the pumpkin had served its purpose, Peacock's friend and local canoe club commodore Adam Farquharson saw a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Sporting a sailor hat and pipe, he navigated the hollowed-out pumpkin, dubbed ‘Cinderella’, down the Tumut River in New South Wales’ Riverina region, much to the amusement of bystanders.

“Barry Humphries said that he’s a big fan of the unnecessary, and I am too. I’m a big one for shenanigans,” he told ABC Riverena.

While initially surprised by Farquharson’s antics, Mr Peacock acknowledged that it was characteristic of his friend’s sense of humour to do something out of the ordinary to make people smile.

“He’s really hilarious. But he’s random, occasionally,” he said.

“I intentionally grew this as a family project and then started doing Facebook updates every week.”

For Mr Farquharson, the voyage was simply about enjoying himself and giving locals an opportunity for a laugh.

Farquharson joked about potential future exploits but remained grounded about his brief moment of fame as “Popeye the Pumpkin Man.”

“I think the worldwide fame will wear off pretty soon. I won’t end up like Taylor Swift. I’ll just get back to life as normal,” he said.

Reflecting on the unusual journey, Mr Farquharson humorously considered preserving the pumpkin as a national curiosity by placing it on a pedestal among Australian sporting royalty.

“It was a sad moment. I did jokingly say to my wife that I should petition the prime minister to have it preserved and put next to Phar Lap’s heart at the National Museum,” he told the ABC.

“She thought I was an idiot.”

Nat Barr breaks down as more details revealed on co-star’s tragic passing

Nat Barr has broken down in tears while paying tribute to Nathan Templeton after his sudden passing.

The body of Templeton, a 44-year-old father of two and regular Sunrise reporter, was found on Monday evening after he suffered a medical incident while walking his dog in Geelong.

The Sunrise panel confirmed the death of their friend and co-host on Thursday morning, playing a montage of Templeton's time on the program, including him reporting from football games, flood zones, Covid labs and at swimming competitions.

Barr's voice over could be heard saying, "Thank you, Tempo, for brightening our lives. We are so fortunate to have known you and worked alongside you. You will be missed."

Following the montage, Barr cried as she paid tribute to the father-of-two and thanked him for "brightening everyone's lives".

"We know you had more stories to tell them (our viewers). We are sorry you can't tell them. Our hearts go out to our family, your two little boys, Kate, and everyone who knew you inside this building and across the Seven Network," she said.

"But also so many of you who have written in and just said that you felt like you knew him because of how he... How he conducted himself on-air."

The on-air tribute comes after Templeton's family broke their silence on Nathan's tragic passing, issuing a statement saying the "adoring father and wonderful friend" will be sorely missed.

"Our hearts are broken for an adoring father and a wonderful friend, who'll be missed by many," the statement read.

In the wake of his untimely death, it has been revealed that Templeton had recently dialled back his time on screen to deal with personal issues.

“I’m excited to be back”: Fergie joins list of luminaries Down Under

Sarah Ferguson has returned to Australia for the first time in years to help battle a major problem facing our nation, while sharing her love for the country.

The Duchess of York is visiting Melbourne to take part in the Global Citizen NOW summit from March 4th, which is seeking to drive urgent action to end extreme poverty and address the climate crisis in the Asia-Pacific region.

In an exclusive interview with news.com.au, Fergie shared her love of Australia, describing the country as a "haven" and sharing her excitement to be back Down Under.

“Australia feels like a home away from home to me,” the 64-year-old royal said.

“My sister Jane has lived here for decades, so I have visited many times over the years. I have so many memories of wonderful moments."

“I remember the excitement of going to the Melbourne Cup with my mother, for example. I’m excited to be back again to make new memories."

“I love the Aussie outlook on life and of course I adore your incredible landscapes and wildlife, which are like nothing you see in Europe."

“Australia has often been a haven for me. One thing I particularly like is that there is no culture of building people up in order to knock them down again later, which you see elsewhere.”

Fergie will be joined at the summit by hundreds of other leading voices, famous personalities and political figures, including actor Hugh Jackman, musicians Crowded House and former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

The Duchess said that she has taken a special interest in the issue of preserving the planet for future generations, worrying about what the state of the world looks like in the years to come for her grandchildren.

“Becoming a grandmother has really changed my outlook on life,” she revealed.

“I have always loved nature and the great outdoors, but now I find myself reflecting on what sort of world we are going to leave to our grandchildren’s generation."

“Let’s be honest, it doesn’t look great, does it? So far, my generation has failed to take the big decisions necessary to safeguard the future of the planet, to the point that scientists are telling us the changes we are seeing to our climate and biodiversity are becoming irreversible."

“I really hope we can take global, concerted action to change things. We have a responsibility to do so."

Selfie-taking tourists launched from Venice gondola after refusing to sit down

A group of rowdy tourists have ended up in the waters of a Venice canal after causing a ruckus onboard the boat.

Six passengers were travelling on a canal in the Italian hotspot when the boat was heading towards a low bridge that they needed to pass under.

The gondolier explained to the tourists that they needed to sit down and be still as the boat passed under the bridge, explaining that a change in weight would cause an issue.

Despite the gondolier's warning, the tourists continued to stand up and move around the narrow vessel to take selfies of their journey.

Predictably, ignoring the requests of the gondolier caused the vessel to capsize, sending the tourists into the freezing water as the gondolier jumped to safety.

No one was injured in the mishap, as the tourists swam to safety at the bank of the canal, before seeking refuge at La Fenice theatre, according to Venice police.

According to a spokesman for the city’s gondola association, the gondola was not damaged, although the upholstered furniture in the vessel was ruined by the water.

The spokesperson went on to confirm that the gondolier had instructed the tourists not to move around or stand up to take selfies during the manoeuvre, but due to a language barrier, the tourists did not comply.

A video of the incident was posted to an Instagram page called Venezia Non è Disneyland (Venice Is Not Disneyland), an account run by young locals to chronicle tourism in the city, with the video being flooded with comments about the misbehaved tourists.

Many Italian locals were quick to point out how rowdy the tourists must've been to cause the incident, with many pointing out they "didn't know it was possible to capsize a gondola".

Mark and I have talked about it,” she said.

“I have been to Sydney and Manly Beach is my favourite,” she says, adding that the picturesque ferry ride from the city is part of the fun.

“So I really do hope to come out — that would be an absolute dream. I must put it on my vision board.”

Palmer admitted that part of her love of Australia comes from watching Home and Away, with the Channel 7 soap showcasing influencing her love of the country's sandy beaches.

“I am a huge Home and Away fan. Anyone will tell you that. I absolutely love it,” the presenter says.

A trip to Australia would be a welcome holiday for the couple, who have been doing long distance for most of their relationship.

Lambett has been in Australia filming the local version of The Chase game show, while Palmer has been working in her native England.

It is because of this that they have learned to embrace “long distance”, with Palmer convinced it is why their relationship “really works”.

“I think regarding the long distance, we both have our passions and dreams that we follow, so you have your own thing going on and then when you come back with your partner it is the cherry on top,” she says.

“It’s a lovely feeling when you get together."

“We’re both quite similar like that. We’re always busy and we come together and it’s pure happiness.”

Petition launched for Miss Universe Australia to step down

A petition is calling for Australia’s Miss Universe Moraya Wilson to step down, following reports that her parents owe $45 million to creditors.

According to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) her parents, Anton and Melinda Wilson, owe $45 million to creditors following multiple company liquidations.

They also owe $21 million to the tax office, with Anton Wilson due in court next month for knowingly signing a false declaration and defrauding creditors of a bankrupt, according to news.com.au.

So where does Moraya come into all of this?

It is reported that she is the director of 10 companies that ASIC is looking to have struck off the business register, although she has denied any knowledge of, or involvement in the businesses.

Moraya said that she had “tendered my resignation from all of the companies”.

However, Anton Wilson's bankrupt trustee Nicholas Crouch, claims that Moraya was listed as the sole director of these 10 companies so that the family business can continue to run despite her parent's bankruptcies.

In a submission to a parliamentary inquiry into ASIC lodged last year, Crouch wrote: “21-year-old daughter is now nominated as the director of the family construction group.

“It would appear the family business has not been disrupted by strategic bankruptcies and liquidations.”

It is also alleged that one of the companies Moraya is a director of owes $13,204 to the Australian Taxation Office, which means that it was operating and trading as a business.

Her father claims that when Moraya was 19, and already successful in her modelling career, she wanted “to carve a career in property development”, so he offered her “general father-daughter advice”.

“I just politely, as a father does to his daughter, said ‘I’ll help you get into business’. Pretty simple,” Anton said.

Now, a Change.org petition has been launched by a member of the public, calling for her to step down as Australia’s top model.

The petition reads: “Miss Universe is an international competition that empowers women and promotes diverse representations of beauty across the globe. This beauty goes beyond appearance and includes character and personality …”

However, Moraya said that she still intends to compete in the international pageant later this month.

“I have become aware of a petition,” she said.

“I intend to fulfil my duties as Miss Universe Australia to the best of my ability with the full support of The Miss Universe Australia management.”

The organiser of the Miss Australia pageant, Troy Barbagallo also said that the controversy was “none of my business," and remains certain of his choice of Moraya as Australia’s top model.

“There is (a) wide range of criteria and a large selection committee who found Moraya to be the best person for the job among 24 exceptional women and we stand by that decision,” he said.

The model is set to travel El Salvador later this month for the international pageant.

Images: Instagram

Adele has broken down during an emotional show in Las Vegas, after she locked eyes with a special audience member.

The British songstress was performing at her residency show with a special Halloween show when she spotted a familiar face in the crowd.

While dressed as Morticia from the Addams Family for the spooky-themed concert, Adele began to perform her hit song When We Were Young from her award-winning album 25.

She suddenly burst into tears and ran into the audience, as she spotted the doctor who delivered her son Angelo ten years ago.

Adele could be seen mouthing “Shut up!” in between lines of the heartbreaking ballad, as she couldn't believe what she was seeing.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by 𝒜𝒹𝑒𝓁𝑒 𝐿𝒶𝓊𝓇𝒾𝑒 𝐵𝓁𝓊𝑒 𝒜𝒹𝓀𝒾𝓃𝓈 (@thirtyfreeadele)

“Oh my god, Colin! "These guys have held on": Why a family turned down $50 million for their home

A Sydney family has repeatedly refused to sell their family home to major developers, despite being offered an eight-figure sum for the property.

The Zammit family have lived in their impressive home for several decades and have said time and time again that they have no intentions of selling the house, which is situated on a 20,000 square metre parcel of land in western Sydney.

With the massive area of land being smack bang in the centre of a major housing development, some realtors have estimated that the property could fetch a price as high as $50 million.

Despite the family saying they would be staying in the home, documents obtained by news.com.au have confirmed that the house was up for sale in both 2015 and and 2016.

The house was swiftly taken off the market after being initially listed with a price range $858,000 to $945,000.

And just a few years later, they are believed to have received offers of between $33 million and $50 million.

The massive property boasts a lush green lawn in stark contrast to all the houses around it and also a huge 200 metre driveway.

But just metres away are rows and rows of carbon copy grey houses crammed into tight blocks as part of a major development.

The high-density neighbouring homes are built right up to the fence of the Zammit's property, and neighbours reportedly don’t want the owners to sell as they like living in a cul-de-sac.

It’s estimated that 50 houses could fit on the Zammit's block of land if they followed the same style as other developer homes in the area.

A local real estate agent previously praised the Zammit family for staying put, despite the big payouts they have likely been offered.

“The fact that most people sold out years and years ago, these guys have held on. All credit to them,” Ray White Quakers Hill agent Taylor Bredin told 7News.

“Depending on how far you push the development plan, you’d be able to push anywhere from 40 to 50 properties on something like this, and when subdivided, a 300 square metre block would get a million dollars.”

Amanda Keller breaks down during emotional win

In a heartwarming display of both resilience and talent, Amanda Keller, one-half of the iconic Jonesy and Amanda radio duo, took home the prestigious Best On Air Team (FM) award at the 34th Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs).

The heartfelt triumph unfolded on Saturday night in Sydney, offering a poignant testament to the power of radio as a medium for empathy, connection and joy.

Keller and her steadfast co-host of 18 years, Brendan Jones, clinched the FM radio industry's most esteemed accolade, an honour comparable to the Gold Logie at the TV awards. The Jonesy and Amanda show emerged victorious over formidable contenders, including KIIS FM's The Kyle and Jackie O Show and Nova's national drive show, Ricki-Lee, Tim and Joel.

Keller's genuine and tearful acceptance of the award, as she stood on the grand stage in Sydney, marked an emotional highpoint in her illustrious career.

"This was the most meaningful win of my career," Keller confessed, as her emotions swelled. It was a bittersweet moment for her, accentuated by the weight of recent hardships. Keller acknowledged that this week had been particularly challenging, with a barrage of disheartening news. However, she recognised the privilege of her role in "acknowledging the world's challenges every day and playing the delicate dance of uplifting people's spirits."

Keller's gracious spirit extended to her co-host, Brendan Jones, whom she showered with accolades. "Jonesy has a life enthusiasm that lifts you, no matter what," she shared with news.com.au. "There's a very sunny energy to him that's very attractive."

Jonesy, in turn, reciprocated the praise, revealing the synergy that has sustained their partnership for nearly two decades. "Sometimes my brain is like a hive of bees," he admitted, "but Amanda will come in early in the morning and just say, 'let's do this.' And I'll go, 'OK.' She's always the nucleus of what we're doing every day, and I don't know how she does it."

However, what made this ACRAs win particularly poignant was the backdrop of Keller's recent announcement. Just two weeks before the award ceremony, Keller publicly revealed for the first time that her husband, Harley, had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. In a heartfelt moment on her podcast, Double A Chattery, Keller disclosed that her partner of 34 years had received this life-altering diagnosis six years ago.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Amanda Keller (@amandarosekeller)

"This was something I've never spoken about," Keller said regarding her decision to share this deeply personal aspect of her life. When asked why she chose to speak out about it now, Keller articulated her desire for understanding and empathy. "I want to go to a restaurant and not have people think, 'what's going on with Harley?' I just want people to go, 'there it is, that's what's happening. He's a smart, funny, interesting man, but this is happening to him.' I just wanted him to be understood."

In the midst of life's profound challenges and amidst the tumultuous waves of breaking news, Keller and Jones have demonstrated the remarkable power of radio to bring joy, comfort, and a sense of shared humanity to their listeners. Their ACRAs win serves as a touching reminder that the voices behind the microphone are not just entertainers; they are storytellers, companions and friends who uplift, console, and inspire us in our everyday lives.

Images: Instagram

"I would say it again": Ray Martin doubles down on Voice comments

Ray Martin has been grilled in an explosive interview over his divisive comments about No voters ahead of the Voice to Parliament referendum.

The veteran journalist appeared on A Current Affair to double down on his comments, saying he does not regret what he said.

On Wednesday, Ray Martin spoke to supporters of the Yes campaign at the Factory Theatre in Marrickville, in Sydney's inner west, as he called out those who are voting No, suggesting they are too lazy to educate themselves by performing a simple Google search, and instead are being driven by division and fear.

Martin said, “If you don’t know, find out what you don’t know.”

"What that excellent slogan is saying, is if you’re a dinosaur or a d**khead who can’t be bothered reading, then vote No.”

In the tense interview, in which Langdon continuously interrupted Martin, the ACA host suggested the Voice debate “needs to calm down and get back to being respectful”.

“Do you regret those comments, Ray?” she asked

“No, I don’t,” Martin said.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by A Current Affair (@acurrentaffair9)

“This is a really important referendum. That is a dinosaur."

"It is such an important vote, it is so important, and you need to find out.”

“A lot of families have a lot of stuff on the plate,” Langdon said. “They are worried about power and food prices and crime, and many of them are the people that you’re calling names.”

Martin insisted “no I am not”.

“This is not a difficult one — you do not need a dictionary to find out what it is about,” he said.

“It is about two things. It is about recognising First Australians in the Constitution, and do we give them a Voice … no veto, a Voice after 200 years of being told what to do. It is not about treaties or reimbursements. It is about nothing apart from these two things.”

Langdon said Martin was a “respected journalist for many years” and knew “language is important, and the language used in that speech was inflammatory”, but Martin stood by his words.

“I do not think it is and I stick by the language,” Martin said. “I would say it again. It was at Marrickville Hall when I was speaking, I was not speaking at the Catholic church up at the lectern. I was not talking to Women’s Weekly.”

Asked again if he thought his language was disrespectful, Martin said, “I’ll tell you what’s disrespectful — voting, and admitting your ignorance, and going ahead and voting on such an important issue as this.”

Ray Martin went on to say the language he used was “part of the Australian vernacular and you will hear it all the time on morning radio”, calling out conservative broadcasters who use similar insults to throw at the Yes campaign.

Langdon admitted she watched Martin‘s full speech and while much of it was “very powerful”, the debate had “become inflammatory and divisive” and “you know that the most controversial thing you say is what is going to be picked up, and it has”.

“I have been a journalist almost 60 years and I think people trust me,” Martin said.

“I have reason to be trusted and I think this is really important. I do not think we should be scared by a scare campaign. I do not think we should look for something that is not in the referendum and I think that has happened. That is what the No side is doing.”

He continued, "I do not think it is confusing. We have only made it confusing. The words are simple. Do you recognise the First Australians? Do you want to give them a Voice for the first time? Instead of telling them how to run their lives. When we listen to them in community health, community education and community life, we do much better. Instead of telling them what to do.”

Martin admitted that the Yes campaign has not been perfect, but that was not a good enough reason to vote No on October 14th.

“If you’re asking me has the campaign been good, I would say no,” Martin conceded.

“And if you ask me whether this referendum will end poverty and disadvantage, the answer is no. But it is unquestionably a step forward.”
